It’s All About What Makes Us Canadian
There are many things that set us apart as Canadians, including our cuisine, and I’m not just talking about poutine and maple bacon. Canadian cuisine has unique flavours, methods of preparation, and combinations of ingredients. But what really goes into creating amazing dishes, besides, of course, the passionate people that create them? Here are just a few things:
High-quality Canadian ingredients
More and more, Canadians are becoming aware that buying local is important to our communities, our health, as well as our economy, and it’s becoming a big part of the way we cook. Many restaurants are increasingly stocking their cupboards and refrigerators with fresh food from local farms and communities, and more people are researching restaurants that offer local options when deciding where to dine.
This one goes hand-in-hand with the first point. Everyone knows that Canada has a diverse and always-changing climate; in fact, it’s something many of us love about living in Canada. So why wouldn’t we expect our food to revolve around the seasons like so many other things do? From Brussels sprouts and asparagus in the fall, to cucumbers, eggplant, and zucchini in the summer, there is a delicious rotation of foods that vary season by season, and those options are just in Ontario! It’s safe to say that there’s something for everyone, no matter what season it is, and that’s part of the reason Canadian cuisine is so great.
Canada is not only made up of different climates, it’s also made up of a multitude of cultures. That really sets us apart from many other countries in the world. It doesn’t come as a surprise, then, that we are more than willing to look far and wide for inspiration and ideas when it comes to what we put on our plates. From Maritime scallops, Ontario fish and chicken, all the way to AAA Alberta beef and Québec cheeses, it is easy to imagine yourself in another part of the country when devouring these tasty dishes.
Crafted with care
Like we said before, a big part of what goes into creating Canadian cuisine is the people who prepare it. One of the most widely-spread facts about Canadians is that we care. We hold the door open for strangers, and we apologize when do something wrong; maybe we apologize a little too much. But this just means that we are passionate, and that passion shows in everything we do. This is just another reason why we are able to create outstanding dishes like Ontario Pickerel ‘n Chips and Smoked Olive Gnocchi.
