The Importance of Not Skipping Lunch
When we gain weight, or feel a little sluggish due to poor eating, our go-to solution is to stop eating in order to compensate. Many of us tend to skip lunch on a daily basis due to the reasons above and many more. It is the easiest meal to ignore, being overshadowed by work or other daily activities. If you are trying to lose weight, or simply wish to maintain your health, there is one vitally important rule you must follow: eat. While this may seem counter-productive, ask any doctor, nutritionist, or healthy lifestyle blogger and they’ll tell you the same thing. Skipping meals is one of the worst things you can do if you’re trying to live a little healthier, and here’s why:
If you work in an office, you know that snacks and junk food are everywhere. Vending machines, cafeterias, and friendly coworkers are more than happy to supply you with chips, candies, and amazing baked goods we just can’t say no to – especially when we’re hungry. If you skip lunch, you’re going to be hungry, increasing the likelihood you’ll jump at the chance to have a snack. You can avoid over-indulging on snacks if you fill yourself up with something a little more health conscious during lunch.
As we all know, food gives you energy, and what you eat will affect your energy levels throughout the day. If you find yourself slowing down mid-day, you’re probably just hungry. That bag of chips, or that granola bar you found in your purse will only give you a small burst of energy that will leave you crashing and even more tired than you were before. A well-balanced lunch (whether you made it at home, or had lunch downtown) will give you the energy to make it through your long work day.
Many of us skip meals to compensate for over-eating the day before. This sets off what you’d call a vicious cycle. If you skip a meal, you’re going to be even more hungry when you get home. While you may have dodged the extra calories that lunch would bring, your more than likely to eat more when you get home. If you eat a decent lunch, you have the rest of the day to burn off those calories with regular activities. If you compensate for the skipped meal with a large dinner, those calories and fats are just going to sit in your body overnight while you sleep, leading to weight gain and general bad feelings in the morning.
There will always be excuses not to do something. Eating is something we all enjoy, so why skip it? Lunch is an extremely important meal, and there are more than enough ways to get a healthy lunchtime meal into your system on a daily basis. Be it finding a trendy recipe online to make at home, or getting out of the office to have lunch downtown (Ottawa has many restaurants to fit your tastes and diets), eat three square meals a day, and you’ll end up feeling happy, healthy, and energized.
